(CLEVELAND) The Chicago Cubs have scored their first World Series run in 71 years. In fact, they scored their first five World Series runs since 1945, beating the Cleveland Indians, 5-1, and evening the World Series at 1 game a piece.
Anthony Rizzo doubled home Kris Bryant with one out in the first inning to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead *** over Cleveland and starting pitcher Trevor Bauer in Game 2 on Wednesday night. It’s the first run the Cubs have scored in the Fall Classic since the eighth inning of a 9-3 loss to the Detroit Tigers in Game 7 of the 1945 World Series.
After getting beat 6-0 in Game 1, the Cubs wasted little time getting to Bauer. The right-hander needed 29 pitches to get through the first inning, though the right pinkie finger he hurt while working on a drone earlier this month remained blood-free. However, Bauer left the game after two outs in the third inning.
Kyle Schwarber, playing as DH, had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s in four at bats and help fuel a 5-0 lead.
The Cub’s picthing ace Jake Arrieta had a no-hitter going until the sixth inning, but gave up a double to Jason Kipnis. Then the Indians’ second-baseman later scored on a wild pitch by Arrieta, bringing the Indians back to within a 5-1 margin.
The series now moves to Wrigley Field for games three, four and five. Click here for the box score at mlb.com
