(SPRINGFIELD) In Springfield today, the legislators have gone home for two weeks without voting on a grand bargain compromise that was taking shape in the state senate. Representatives went home yesterday and senators today, after a brief session this morning.
Still no deal to raise the income tax, or put the sales taxes on some services or impose a new business tax, but Senate President John Cullerton told senators before adjourning they should be prepared to vote early next month.
“The problems we face are not going to disappear. In fact, they’re going to get more difficult everyday. So, when the Senate returns to session the week of February 7 everybody should be ready and prepared to vote,” said Cullerton.
Republican leader Christine Radogno gave what she called “a little pep talk” to the senators, “There’s going to be a lot of pressure on us when we go home. On you guys from certain elements, on us from certain elements.”
But even if the senate passes something, Speaker Madigan could stop it in the House.
