(CHICAGO) Tonight, President Trump announces his Supreme Court appointment and U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) is trying to be polite about it.
Senate Republicans refused to even hold a hearing for Obama’s nominee Merrick Garland of Skokie for the Supreme Court, so is Durbin – the number 2 Senate Democrat and Judiciary Committee member – planning the same for Trump’s nominee?
“I want to judge this person on the merits, find out whether they are in fact mainstream and moderate. If they’re fire-breathers from the right or left they need not apply, as far as I’m concerned. If they can come down the center stripe and prove it to me, I’ll be looking forward to it,” said Senator Durbin.
When asked, “so you don’t want to get even,” Durbin responded, “Well, of course I have this in the back of my mind. It was fundamentally unfair but we have a responsibility beyond political fairness. We have a responsibility to the constitution. Let’s look at this in honest terms.”
