(CHICAGO) The Chicago Police Department today released its monthly crime statistics for January 2017. Police recorded 51 murders across the city last month, one more that in January of 2016.
Police recorded 51 murders across the city last month, one more than January 2016 and there were 234 shooting incidents, eight fewer than in January 2016, with 299 victims, an increase of eight compared last January.
The number of guns recovered by officers is also up. Some 600 guns were recovered last month, a 60 percent increase over January of 2016. Gun arrests have also more than doubled.
“We’re locking up the guys with guns,” Johnson said. “We need other people to help us keep them where they should be. These individuals are showing us that they don’t want to play by the rules of society, so it’s up to us to give them somewhere to sit down and think about it.”
