(CHICAGO) There is local reaction to President Donald Trump’s proposed federal budget which contains much more for defense and much less for arts and sciences and poverty programs.
At the ribbon cutting for the new Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago now called the Ability Lab, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) denounced the billions Trump wants to cut from medical research. Durbin said it’s not just a talking points budget.
“It is as real as it can be,” Durbin said. “This is a President of the United States, recently elected, who believes he is exercising his priorities in bring us this budget. Well I can tell you, he’s in for a fight in Congress and I hope the Republicans will join a lot of Democrats in fighting for bio-medical research.
U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) is also denouncing the Trump budget because she says it cuts vital programs to pay for Trump’s border wall.
