(CHICAGO) Prosecutors have added on 16 new counts to the first-degree murder charges against a Chicago Police officer accused of shooting a teenager 16 times.
A new indictment handed up by a grand jury adds 16 counts of aggravated battery with a firearm. It appears that each count is for each shot Chicago Police officer Jason Van Dyke fired at 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.
Lawyers for Van Dyke had filed motions to dismiss the original six first-degree murder charges against Van Dyke. They had claimed irregularities” by prosecutors tainted the original grand jury.
The shooting took place in October 2014 but charges weren’t filed until last year after a dash cam video of the shooting was made public, prompting protests across the country.
