(CHICAGO) Illinois top ranking Democrat has undergone a medical procedure to correct an irregular heartbeat.
U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) will be sidelined for about a week as he recovers from an outpatient procedure performed at Northwestern Memorial Hospital on Tuesday.
During his recent annual physical, doctors found a condition known as atrial flutter.
After discussing his treatment options, Durbin chose a procedure known as catheter ablation, a low-risk outpatient procedure where the catheter emits a pulse of painless radio frequency energy which destroys the abnormal heart tissue and corrects the irregular heartbeat.

He used the procedure to again call for the preservation of Obamacare, saying in a statement that, “My Congressional colleagues who want to cut funding for medical research and take away health insurance for millions of Americans should remember that all of us are only one diagnosis away from needing the best care for ourselves and the people we love.”
