(CHICAGO) A girl around 12 or 13 years old was on a small rocky beach near the 7700 block of North Eastlake Terrace, late this morning, when she decided to go into the water. A short time later, she went under.
Ron Dorneker with the Chicago Fire Department says they were on the scene within a few minutes but it took about 45 minutes for divers to pull her out of the water and perform CPR. “Due to the winds, the current, and the limited visibility it was a difficult search for the divers,” said Dorneker.
The girl was taken to a hospital in extremely critical condition and died less than 3 hours later.
While she was not swimming at an official beach, Chicago officials are offering a reminder: It’s warm outside but the lake is still cold and beaches do not officially open until May 26.
