(CHICAGO) Some important changes are coming to the Chicago Police Department. The CPD is going to implement a new use of force policy.
Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson says it will be more “clearly defined” and focus on “the sanctity of life.” It comes after the Laquan McDonald video – and Superintendent Johnson says the shooting at the hands of Officer Jason Van Dyke was a “springboard” for reform. According to 30th Ward Alderman Ariel Reboyras, “The process used to develop this policy is an example of the police department’s commitment to reform and building the community’s trust.”
The new policy says force should be used as a last resort and should be limited when a suspect is fleeing. It also recommends de-escalation training and requires immediate medical assistance when a person is injured person. Officer training will start this fall.
