(CHICAGO) The repeat gun offenders bill which has already passed the Illinois Senate has advanced to the floor of the Illinois House.
The idea is to keep repeat gun offenders in prison longer, closer to 14 years than seven. An Illinois House Committee advanced the bill after police Superintendent Eddie Johnson made another trip down to Springfield to testify in favor of it.
“I’ve been a cop for 29 years and I’ve done nothing in Chicago but chase bad guys around and most of those bad guys had guns. What I can tell you is this, when you can make a mental culture of accountability for these gun crimes they react to it,” said Supt. Johnson.
The other side says the bill would discriminate against African-Americans. However, Governor Rauner has indicated he’s open to the idea if it reaches his desk.
