(CHICAGO) No state budget means layoffs at Northeastern Illinois University. The school had a couple of temporary shutdowns earlier this year and furloughed employees but officials say, with a $10 million shortfall and reduced state funding, the only thing left to do is layoff employees. Some 180 full-time jobs will be cut in the coming weeks.
Northeastern Illinois student Ashlei Ross tells ABC7, “It’s scary because you don’t want to see your staff leave. It’s scary because you’re like, ‘Are we going to close?’”
Northeastern President Richard Helldobler says “We have no intention of closing and we will continue to manage this crisis as best we can going forward.”
Helldobler says 130 of those who will receive layoff notices are civil service employees. The remainder will be administrative professionals.
