(CHICAGO) The Chicago Tribune has been crusading against Cook County Assessor Bill Berrios for supposedly running a property tax assessment system that favors the rich who can hire lawyers and abuses poor minorities who can’t.
Berrios denied racism and as he walked out of his own press conference he said, “If you can be right 100% of the time, then god bless ya.”
But before he walked out, Berrios dismissed the notion that it’s unethical for him to accept campaign contributions from property tax lawyers like House Speaker Mike Madigan, saying “I take campaign contributions from property tax lawyers and anyone else who wishes to contribute to my campaign just as any other elected official can do here in the St of Illinois.”
Berrios is the chairman of Cook County Democrats and Madigan is chairman of state Democrats.
