(CHICAGO) Civil rights lawyers have filed a federal lawsuit against the city and they want a federal judge to oversee Chicago police conduct reforms.
Mayor Emanuel backed off his pledge to let a federal judge oversee changes. Now he only wants a lawyer to do it.
So more than a dozen civil rights lawyers sued, and the mayor’s response is that the Trump Justice Dept never would have wanted a judge to oversee cops anyway.
“Obviously there was an election that changed the Justice Dept,” Emanuel said, “but it doesn’t change what we’re committed to getting done.”
Emanuel was asked twice whether he’s willing to go into court with the civil rights lawyers to work out a compromise, but he walked away.
