CHICAGO (AP) — The city of Chicago has agreed to pay $9.5 million to a man who was severely injured when he struck his head on the pavement after being shocked with a Taser by a police officer.
The Chicago Tribune reports that the city agreed to settle Jose Lopez’s federal lawsuit that contended Lopez wasn’t combative before Officer Stevan Vidljinovic used the Taser on him in 2011.
A jury in February found that Vidljinovic used excessive force but the two sides reached a settlement amount before the jury could determine damages and this month Lopez’s lawyer disclosed the amount in a motion.
If the City Council approves the settlement it would add to the more than $500 million that the city has paid out in lawsuits against police officers.
