(CHICAGO) The trial is now on hold for the wife of a former Fox Lake Police lieutenant who killed himself and tried to make it look like he was killed in the line of duty.
Melodie Gliniewicz was due to go on trial on July 3rd. However, a judge recently ruled that prosecutors cannot introduce as evidence texts and e-mails between Gliniewicz and her late husband Charles Joseph Gliniewicz because marital privilege laws protect communications between the husband and wife.
Prosecutors say that hurts their case and they are now appealing the judge’s ruling.
Lt. Gliniewicz committed suicide in September 2015. Investigators say he was afraid officials would discover that he was stealing money from a police youth group that he headed.
Melodie Gliniewicz was indicted after her husband died and has pleaded not guilty to charges including unlawful use of charitable funds, conspiracy, and money laundering.
The charges carry a maximum sentence of seven years in prison.
