(SPRINGFIELD, Ill.) — Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner today released a statement regarding the slow progress of the General Assembly’s budget negotiations as they work down to the wire.
In the statement Rauner says, “If the legislature fails to send a balanced budget package to my desk by Friday, we will have no choice but to keep them in session until they get the job done.”
The Senate has already passed a budget but the House hasn’t taken it up. Instead, House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) has come up with his own budget. Republicans though don’t believe it is balanced.
If lawmakers can’t pass a budget by July 1, the state’s bond rating could suffer and social services and other services would likely be impacted.
