(CHICAGO) A new coalition of reputable good government groups delivered petitions to the offices of Mayor Rahm Emanuel the city council, asking that the next Chicago police labor agreement stop shielding officers from being investigated.
The Fraternal Order of Police contract is up this summer and Tanya Watkins of this new Coalition for Police Contracts Accountability says the current deal shields too many bad cops from being investigated. “We believe that the police contract makes it too hard to identify police misconduct, make it too easy for officers to lie about police misconduct, allow officials to ignore evidence of police misconduct, make it too hard to investigate police misconduct and allow repeat abusers to cost taxpayers money without accountability.”
But the Fraternal Order of Police says these protections were legitimately negotiated to protect officers from frivolous complaints by bad guys.
