(CHICAGO) Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle is threatening 1100 layoffs next week because the courts have put a hold on the new county sweetened beverage tax. However, three county board members who voted against the tax, say she should cut the fat instead.
County Commissioners Boykin, Schneider and Tobolski have formed a working group to find millions to cut without so many layoffs in law enforcement.
Tim Schneider, the chairman of Illinois Republicans says it’s time to stop playing “Chicken Little,” adding, “It’s always the case when we talk about eliminating doctors, nurses, correctional employees, sheriiffs employees, let’s cut the lengthy bureaucracy we have here in Cook County instead of all these front line workers and scare alll the indigent, needy and the people suffering and say they’re gonna lose their services.”
The Cook County Health and Hospitals system was cited by Commissioner Tobolski has one place to cut the fat.
