(CHICAGO) The Chicago area received more rain Thursday morning, adding to the woes of flood-weary residents in the north and northwest suburbs. McHenry County Board Chairman Jack Franks told “The Big John and Ramblin’ Ray Show” on WLS that his constituents have had a rough ten days.
“These people for the last week have not gotten any sleep, they’re trying to protect their homes, they’re sandbagging their homes, they’re monitoring their pumps, they’re tired, so hopefully we’ll have more of our volunteers and neighbors go and help these guys.”
The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning through Sunday for the Des Plaines River, which saw record flood levels last week. The flood warning covers the Des Plaines River near Gurnee, Russell and Lincolnshire in Lake County and the Des Plaines River near Des Plaines in Cook County, as well as the Fox River at Algonquin Tailwater in Kane and McHenry counties.
Franks says the recent rain proves the threat is far from over.
“It is a freak of nature and I’m sorry to say that we are nowhere near out of the woods yet. As of yesterday the flood waters were beginning to recede in some of the affected areas, but even under ideal circumstances the flooding won’t be gone for some time, and then the affected communities will have to deal with the cleanup. And it’s going to be an ongoing problem.”
The National Weather Service says the region could receive an additional 1 to 3 inches of rain through this weekend.
