(CHICAGO) The City Council Wednesday is expected to approve the $39M settlement of the red light ticket class action lawsuit. That will likely mean a big pay day for the lawyers who argued their clients should have gotten second notices before having to pay their fines. Their possible take is $11.5M.
On the City Council Finance Committee, Ald Tony Beale told the mayor’s lawyer that’s not right, asking “Is it fair to say that the lawyers found a very good niche to use the taxpayers in a system that was corrupt in order to get paid $11.5M and the people who got fined $1.5M are gonna get $50 back.”
City Hall is settling for $39M because its exposure for failing to send out second notices is believed to be $400M.
