(CHICAGO) Even though Chicago is hiring more cops, police overtime is again on pace to set another record.
Out of control police overtime was a record last year at $143M. It’s again on pace to set another record this year.
Police Supt Eddie Johnson argues it’s necessary because, “We’re using overtime to combat violent crime. I don’t know if you put a price on people’s safety. The mayor has been gracious to continue to let us use it as we see fit, but it is our duty to the taxpayer to make sure we are using it effectively. Our goal is no violence in this city and I just don’t want to put a price tag on peoples’ safety.”
