(CHICAGO) At Wednesday’s City Council meeting, some in the audience noticed a rare slip-up by powerful Alderman Ed Burke.
Burke was debating African-American alderman Tony Beale about how much the red light camera refunds are going to be. Beale said a mere $7. Burke said 42 and added this, “I used to say, ah, ah, that sometimes on the south side wards that they skipped 4th & 5th grade because that’s where they learned division and subtraction.”
Presiding officer Mayor Emanuel: “If I were you, I would go for your motion right now!”
Burke responded, “I’m referring to the 14th ward and the 11th ward!” after which the gavel bangs down.
Observers say this was a rare slip-up by the usually cautious Ed Burke and he was lucky that Beale took it only as a joke.
