An incoming high school student died Monday morning after losing consciousness during a “routine football workout” at Grand Ledge High School, according to school officials.
In a statement Grand Ledge Public Schools Superintendent Brian Metcalf said Everson Guild died after losing consciousness in the high school’s weight room. Efforts by coaches and school staff, who performed CPR with an automatic external defibrillator, and emergency crews who rushed him to Sparrow Hospital were unsuccessful.
“Words cannot begin to express our sorrow over the loss of this young man,” Metcalf said in the statement. “Our hearts go out to his family, his friends and his teammates and we will do everything within our power to ease their grief.”
Metcalf could not immediately be reached for comment Monday afternoon. School officials did not release what time the incident occurred, or Guild’s age.
Tom Driver, a captain with the Grand Ledge Area Fire Department, declined to release any additional information about Guild’s death Monday afternoon.
