(CHICAGO) Lawyers make millions suing city hall. Mayor Daley used to mock them, saying “Well, one thing about lawyers. If ya throw a nickel out on the corner, you’ll get 500 lawyers! “
Now, Alderman Tony Beale is upset that class action lawyers are getting up to a third or more of the settlements they make with city hall, noting “Something needs to change because the way the system is now it’s designed for them to constantly look for big pockets to find how they can dig in and find their pot of gold.”
When asked if the solution lies with the lawyers, Beale replied “So, now you have the wolf watching the hen house, right?”
Judges have the power to limit the fat contingency fees of the lawyers practicing before them, but the lawyers say their fees are justified by the years of work it can take to bring a case a plaintiff could not otherwise afford.
