(CHICAGO) President Donald Trump has named a new U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. Trump is nominating 46-year old John Lausch, to replace Zachary Fardon, who served in the post from 2014 to 2017.
Lausch was a federal prosecutor in the Chicago U.S. Attorney’s office for 11 years, and also served as a supervisor in the office. He is currently with the downtown law firm of Kirkland and Ellis.
Three of the top Democrats in Illinois are praising the appointment. Mayor Rahm Emanuel said: “I want to congratulate John Lausch on his appointment as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. John brings a strong public safety background to the office, and it is my hope that he will use the power of that office to increase the federal prosecution of gun crimes in Chicago and strengthen public safety in our communities.”
U.S. Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth issued a joint statement: “We are pleased that the President has nominated Mr. Lausch. The nonpartisan screening committee we established to evaluate potential candidates came to the same conclusion and recommended him as well. Mr. Lausch has served the people of the Northern District and the cause of justice for years, and we expect him to be a diligent, thoughtful, and principled U.S. Attorney. We look forward to seeing his nomination through the Senate.”
