(CHICAGO) Mayor Emanuel revealed it first to Bill Cameron Friday at a taping of Sunday’s “Connected to Chicago.” At a Sunday City Hall press conference with supporters, he said Chicago is filing suit in Federal Court today, seeking a preliminary injunction to prevent Trump’s Justice Dept from denying the city a law enforcement grant unless it cooperates with the Feds to deport the undocumented.
Emanuel said Trump must not be allowed to put Chicago “in the crosshairs” and he predicted other Sanctuary Cities will join the cause, adding “I happen to be this week down at the Executive Committee of the US Conference of Mayors and I have all the confidence that a New York, a Boston, a San Francisco, a Los Angeles – all the other cities that are Welcoming Cities – will look at this and then take appropriate steps to protect their values as well as their community policing.”
A relatively modest $3M is at stake here in Chicago and so, according to Bill Cameron, the issue is much more valuable to Democrats charging up their base as they try to take control of Congress in next years elections.
