(CHICAGO) As the state school funding fight continues, Mayor Emanuel is paying Governor Rauner a left-handed compliment.
The mayor’s snide remark about Rauner: “I wanna compliment the governor. Because the governor, by playing divisive politics, has brought people around the state of Illinois together on education policy.”
The mayor rattled off a group of suburban and downstate school superintendents who have come out in favor of overriding the governor’s school aid veto and he says he thinks legislators will do just that, explaining, “Legislators of both parties in both chambers will come together and realize, as in the past, and work around the governor’s opposition and ideology on behalf of what’s right for their parents and their students. And that’s exactly what’s gonna happen.”
The only issue Rahm ducked was Cardinal Cupich’s proposal to give tax credits to people who donate money for scholarships to private schools. That and vouchers may be in play behind the scenes in Springfield.
