(CHICAGO) — A former member of the Illinois House doesn’t believe Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto of a education funding bill can be overridden by lawmakers in Springfield.
Former Republican State Rep. Ron Sandeck says while there may be movement in the Senate on the bill, which Rauner modified to strip out additional dollars for Chicago Public Schools pension fund, he doesn’t believe there will be enough votes in the House.
“The votes just aren’t there as far as I can tell, so that means there is no override,” Sandeck told Big Johns and Ramblin’ Ray on WLS. “They certainly aren’t going to vote to accept the governors changes and that puts us back to this, you know, everyone’s in their corners and I know it’s a contentious time and no one wants to give the other side a win but these folks are going to have to find out how to share a victory and move on because time really is short.”
Sandeck says without some compromise, some schools may have a hard time keeping their doors open come late fall and winter.
State Senators are due back in Springfield on Sunday while the House is due back on Wednesday, which also is Governor’s Day at the Illinois State Fair. Rauner stripped the additional dollars from the funding bill calling it an unfair bailout for CPS.
