(CHICAGO) The Illinois State Senate has voted to override Governor Bruce Rauner’s amendatory veto of a school funding measure. The Senate voted 38 to 19 to override Rauner’s changes to the bill that allocates tax money to school districts all over the state. Rauner says he made his changes because the bill as passed gives too much money to the Chicago Public School system. Rauner’s State Board of Education conducted an analysis showing that his changes will cost CPS $463 million this year.
On Sunday, 37 Senate Democrats and one Republican, Sam McCann of downstate Plainview, voted to override Rauner’s changes. The issue now moves on to the Illinois House which meets on Wednesday .
Illinois Lieutenant Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti told “The Big John and Ramblin’ Ray Show” on WLS that she hopes Republicans in the House stick together and vote to uphold Rauner’s veto.
“The Republicans should and must, and I’ll tell you why. Because the kids are counting on us all over the state of Illinois. What the Governor initially did was what is fair and equitable to all children in Illinois. They all need to see equity and fairness in the way of the money that’s coming in and being doled out by the state of Illinois.”
The Sunday override was another political embarrassment for Rauner, who has already seen Republicans vote with Democrats in the House and Senate to override his veto of a bill that raised Illinois income taxes.
