(CHICAGO) Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle is taking a lot of heat for her new penny-per-ounce sweetened beverage tax, but she will not repeal it.
Big Soda is to blame for all the heat, according to Preckwinkle.
She was on channel 11 Tuesday night vowing to keep the tax and win for re-election next year, “Look, I’m proud of the fact I’ve been a responsible steward of Cook Co govt for the last 7 years. What we’ve done is reduce our workforce by 10%, reduce our indebtedness by 11%. We’ve cut $657M in expenses. And I put my record up against anyone.”
Nonetheless, polling suggests she’s vulnerable and potential challengers are assessing how many millions they could raise to run against her.
