(CHICAGO) A federal judge heard arguments, but made no ruling today on whether the Justice Dept can deny Sanctuary Cities federal law enforcement money.
The Justice Dept argued that Trump’s Attorney General Jeff Sessions can attach conditions to the millions in question simply because he has the power to.
City Hall argued no he can’t if he demands Sanctuary Cities co-operate with the feds to deport undocumented immigrants.
After court Chicago’s Corporation Council Ed Siskel told reporters letting Sessions get away with it would set a dangerous precedent, “The mayor argued it’s letting the camel’s nose under the tent. The Justice Dept is allowing the entire camel thru!”
Hard to tell how the judge will rule because the legal arguments were so dense. One can of worms question was whether a double negative in a law could mandate a positive command NOT to do something.
