(CHICAGO) – A man who pleaded guilty to charges in connection with the beating of a 95 year old World War II vet has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Navy vet Josephine Regnier was waiting to be picked up outside of her home in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood last December when she was attacked.
Her daughter later said her then 94-year old mother suffered, “Three fractured ribs, a black eye, and a goose egg on her head.” Regnier’s attacker ran off with her purse.
Olajuwon Claiborne, of Chicago, was arrested a few days later and pleaded guilty to home invasion and robbery in connection with the attack. He cried as he apologized to Regnier, at his sentencing hearing, on Thursday.
Earlier this year, the Bridgeview Lion’s Club honored Regnier with its Veteran of the Year award and greeted her with a standing ovation.
