(CHICAGO) Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle used to say she was “confident” her pop tax will survive a vote next Tuesday to try to repeal it. Now, after millions in advertising both for and against it, she says she’s only “hopeful” the pop tax will survive.
If it doesn’t, she’s promising at least $200M in cuts to her budget, pointing out “In public health and safety because that’s where 87% of our money goes. Almost half of our money is in the public health system and 41% is in public safety in criminal justice.”
If the pop tax repealer passes, she’d be expected to veto the repealer, but so far she’s unwilling to say she’d veto it.
