(CHICAGO) The penny per ounce pop tax comes up for a vote in the Finance Committee of the Cook County Board today, and the outcome is not in doubt, but what President Toni Preckwinkle will do next is.
No doubt commissioners will recommend repeal today in committee and then formally repeal the pop tax tomorrow in the full county board. The question is whether Preckwinkle will veto the repealer when the opponents appear to have a veto-proof majority.
She could just tell the commissioners if you’re so smart you make these cuts, saying “In public health and public safety because that’s where 87% of our money goes.”
Preckwinkle says she won’t tip her hand until AFTER Wednesday’s board meeting.
