AURORA, Ill. (AP) — Police have detained the 31-year-old driver of a car that crashed into a suburban Chicago pond, leaving a boy in critical condition.
Aurora police say the female driver is related to the 6-year-old boy. Three other females ages 21, 15 and 12 were in the vehicle.
Police say the driver said the five were returning to Cicero from a party in Aurora around 2:40 a.m. Sunday when she lost control and the car entered a retention pond near Diehl Road and Interstate 88. The females escaped, but the boy could not.
Rescuers found him in about 15 feet of water roughly 80 feet from shore. They believe he was in the water about 30 minutes. He was taken to an Aurora hospital then transported to a Chicago hospital.
Police say alcohol is thought to be a factor.
