(CHICAGO) Lawyers for disgraced former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich are planning to file a petition with the United States Supreme Court on Thursday, asking the high court to review the imprisoned ex-governor’s case.
Blagojevich has served five and a half years of his 14 year sentence for corruption, including allegations that he tried to sell the U.S. Senate seat that Barack Obama was vacating when he became President in 2008.
Politico reports that Blagojevich’s attorneys will file what is known as a writ of certiorari, which is a formal request for the high court to review the case. Blagojevich has lost numerous appeals in lower courts. If the latest attempt fails, his only remaining chance for freedom would be to ask President Donald Trump for a pardon or clemency.
Blagojevich is not set to be released from federal prison in Colorado until 2024.
