(CHICAGO) — A Monday morning political surprise as Todd Stroger announces he is looking to make a come back.
Stroger tells Big John and Ramblin’ Ray on WLS that he is circulating petitions to run for Cook County board president. He says the county has gone through a tough time under current president Toni Preckwinkle.
“The president asked for a soda tax which was one of the worst things she could’ve done and people reacted in a manner that was to be expected,” Stroger said.
Stroger himself knows about voter backlash from raising taxes. After he took over over as board president following his father John’s death, Stroger eventually lost his seat to Preckwinkle after he imposed a much despised 1-percent sales tax hike. Preckwinkle used that tax as a rallying cry, vowing to repeal it. But Stroger is not apologetic about that tax hike.
“That sales tax was necessary at the time,” Stroger said.
He also feels that he was treated unfairly, particularly by the media. “I think the press never actually gave me a chance to do the job before they condemned me,” Stroger said.
Also in the race is former Chicago Alderman Bob Fioretti.
