(CHICAGO) At Tuesday’s city council meeting, the current sexual harassment scandal was the subject of some political theater in support of the final confirmation of the mayor’s appointment of Andrea Zopp to the Police Board.
Zopp’s independence had earlier been questioned and so Alderman Ed Burke got on his feet to deliver a spirited defense of her.
He whipped out a 1995 court transcript to quote from then-prosecutor Zopp’s argument against Congressman Mel Reynolds for having sex with a 16 year old campaign volunteer, noting “He preyed on the fact that she was messed up, that she was open to the idea of sex. He turned her into a hooker.”
Not to be outdone, Alderman Danny Solis said this to say about the Zopp appointment, “This is the wow appointment. I think you could not have done better. I think if you had appointed Jesus Christ, you couldn’t have done better.”
The vote to confirm Zopp was unanimous.
