(CHICAGO) Today is the first day of filing by candidates in the March 20th primary elections and there were a couple of interesting no-shows when the doors opened at the county clerk’s office.
Toni Preckwinkle showed up at 9 am to get the top spot on the ballot for Cook County Board president, but the men who say they’re challenging her – former county board president Todd Stroger and former Chicago alderman Bob Fioretti – didn’t show up at 9. That means they don’t have the necessary 8200 signatures yet to get on the ballot.
Embattled County Assessor Joe Berrios and his challenger Fritz Kaegi did show up at 9, meaning there will be a lottery for who gets the top spot on their ballot. Berrios has a built-in advantage being the Democratic chairman of the county, but Kaegi is undeterred, saying “The committeemen and the machine are ok with the chairman Joe Berrios, but the voters are done with the assessor.”
In Springfield, billionaire J B Pritzker filed 35,000 signatures for governor. Millionaire Chris Kennedy filed about 10,000.
