(CHICAGO) Today in Washington, the House is expected to vote on the GOP tax plan and the Senate Wednesday. Senator Dick Durbin expects it to pass even with Sen John McCain absent.
Durbin says he thinks the Republicans have enough votes to pass it, which he says will have this effect on Illinois, “The net result of this tax bill is to give tax breaks to the wealthiest people in America and the biggest corporations, to give temporary tax relief to some middle-income families, but it hit Illinois especially hard. Twenty to twenty-five percent of our taxpayers itemize their deductions. So they can deduct the taxes that they pay: the state income tax, sales tax and property taxes. That deduction is going to be limited under this Republican bill. It means more of them will be paying more in taxes instead of less. And sadly, the whole tax bill adds a trillion-and-a-half dollars to our debt, a debt that will have to be paid by our children and grandchildren.”
Republicans say the benefits of economic growth far outweigh what Durbin complains about.
