(CHICAGO) — Last year was not a great year for Illinois population wise.
Late last month, U.S. Census Bureau estimates showed Illinois’ population fell by 33,703 people between July 1, 2016 and July 1 of 2017. That dropped the state from the 5th most populous to the 6th, beat out by Pennsylvania.
Now, tracking statistics from the moving company United Van Lines show that Americans are still heading west, while parts of the Northeast and Midwest are losing people. In fact, Illinois had the highest percentage of outbound moves followed by New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Kansas.
Three of the top four destination states are out West. They include Oregon, Idaho and Nevada. The top state for inbound migration was Vermont.
