(CHICAGO) Still hundreds of murders in Chicago every year, but a new law may mean fewer of them this year.
Depending on who’s doing the counting, the police or the Tribune, homicides in Chicago were either 650 or 670 last year.
Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson is pretty confident they’ll be significantly less this year. That’s because a new law will keep repeat gun offenders in prison much longer. Until now, the superintendent said this about punishment.
“Our gang members in the City of Chicago think our judicial system is a joke! Our repeat guys just don’t fear the judicial system,” says Johnson.
Over the three-day New Year’s holiday weekend 26 people were shot in the city, but that was half as many as last year.
