(CHICAGO) Governor Bruce Rauner didn’t have a great 2017, but he may get a big win from the U. S. Supreme Court sooner than later this year.
Rauner’s been trying to weaken labor unions and in the Illinois case Janus vs AFSCME the conservative US Supreme Court may let freedom of speech do just that. No one will be surprised if this court allows state employees to stop paying dues to unions they don’t believe in even if they represent them.
Rauner has called union dues “unfair share fees.”
“People can choose whether to be in the union or not. They can’t choose whether they’re forced to pay these unfair share fees. We hope this process will go thru the courts expeditiously. It could take a little while, but we’re confident we will prevail.”
He may be right. The last time the issue was litigated the court deadlocked with a 4 to 4 tie vote. Since then conservative Neil Gorsuch has been added the court.
