(CHICAGO) A Chicago area dancer, who was paralyzed after an O’hare bus shelter collapsed on her, reaches a settlement with the City of Chicago.
Tierney Darden was waiting inside a bus shelter at O’Hare airport, during a storm in 2015, when it came crashing down on her. Her spine was severed and she can no longer walk.
Her lawyers said that the city shelters were poorly maintained and had corroded or broken parts and missing bolts.
Darden sued the city which offered her a $22 million settlement.
Last August, a jury awarded her a record $148 million settlement and Darden told reporters, “My legs were taken away and those were the two things that I needed to do the one thing that I loved which was dance.”
The city argued that the court verdict was “excessive” and both sides have settled for $115 million.
Darden’s lawyer says his client, who is now 26-years old, will use the money for the medical care she needs for the rest of her life.
