(CHICAGO) Because of the growing concern about CTE in football players, a new state law has been proposed by State Representative Carol Sente of Vernon Hills, to ban tackle football for kids under 12.
The idea is not to ban football, but to prevent kids under 12 from getting concussions when their brains are in key development.
Former Hersey High School and Harvard college football player, now Dr. Chris Nowinski of the Concussion Legacy Foundation would prefer a higher age, “If I was advising a parent, I would say wait until 14, but for this bill, I think 12 makes a lot of sense. We do have a lot of research that shows 12 matters. There’s a magical period of brain development happening between the ages of 8 and 12 and it’s a terrible time to be hitting him over the head with anything.”
Mike Adamle, the former football star and TV sportscaster who suffers from CTE, was showing the symptoms at the news conference annoucing the proposal as he waved his arm and knocked over a microphone, who said “…as I got older and older (WAVES HIS ARM AND THE SOUND OF MICROPHONE GOING OVER THE SIDE OF THE PODIUM AND HITTING THE FLOOR). That kind of (TONE INSERTED TO ELIMINATE THE WORD “SHIT”) happens all the time! (laughter)!”
