District officials in Duluth, Minnesota have removed the classic novels “To Kill A Mockingbird” and “The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn” from the required reading list, due to racial slurs used in the books.
An official told a local paper “”We felt that we could still teach the same standards and expectations through other novels that didn’t require students to feel humiliated or marginalized by the use of racial slurs”.
The local NAACP chapter praised the decision
The books will still be available in the school libraries, but will be replaced next year in the required curriculum.
