(SPRINGFIELD, Ill.) — Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich was in Springfield Wednesday to talk about efforts to end gun violence. But Cupich may have been aiming his message at the wrong audience.
A lot of what the Cardinal called on lawmakers to do may be better off handled on Capitol Hill. Here’s what he wants to do with regards to identify potential mass shooters.
“Our elected officials have the power to fund and authorize data sharing among authorities to help ID and engage those who are likely to commit those crimes before they even pick up a weapon,” Cupich said.
That would be an awfully big undertaking at the state level. Illinois already keeps tabs on gun owners through the FOID card with background checks essentially being run everyday on FOID card holders, according to the Illinois State Rifle Association. At most, some say that the fault in Illinois lies with local law enforcement not following up on revoked FOID card holders, or a lack of reporting by mental health facilities.
Many at the federal level have already acknowledged that there are holes in the federal background check system that should be addressed.
