(CHICAGO) Stepping off at Hubbard and Wolcott at 12:30 p.m. Saturday and winding through Chicago streets is the “Chiditarod.”
“It’s based partially off of the Alaskan dog race and it’s also based off of a group in New York that used to do a shopping cart costume pub crawl,” said Spokesperson Stephanie Esposito.
Esposito tells WLS-AM this is a fun event but is also about giving. It raises money and food for the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Participants have to raise money and collect at least 69 pounds of food. Since the theme is “food” shopping carts are featured on race day, “Take a standard shopping cart, it has to be able to fit through a standard doorway, and you can deck it out however you want. So, in year’s past we’ve had a giant beeshive on top of it,” said Esposito.
It’s too late to register for the race but they welcome spectators and Esposito says you might be surprised by some of the costumes that people whip up.
