(CHICAGO) — It looks like some 1,100 students at Downers Grove North and South High Schools will have to serve detention for walking out of school on Wednesday as part of a national protest on gun violence.

Community High School District 99 says they met with students ahead of Wednesday’s protests and offered them alternatives but the students turned those options down.

District 99 Superintendent Hank Thiele says in a letter to parents that, “accepting the consequences for their actions” allows those students who protested “to receive the full civics lesson of what it means to participate in a protest.”

Students can serve the one hour detention before or after school as well as on Saturdays.

District officials say some 3,900 students did not participate int he walkout and remained in class.
