(CHICAGO) This morning, at City Hall, the toughest proposal for community oversight of Chicago police gets a hearing in the City Council Public Safety Committee.
This Civilian Police Accountability Council would be empowered to set police policy and fire a police supt.
But Nick Sposato, the pro-police alderman recently reminded his colleagues there’s plenty of police oversight already, “First of all they have body cameras. They have supervisors to answer to. They have IAD, the IG, COPA, the Police Board, the AG, the FBI, the Illinois Torture Board and I suppose we could also throw in the DOJ if we wanted to.”
This CPAC is expected to be rejected in favor of a competing proposal that waters down community oversight to little more than an advisory role.
